Activities of Daily Living of Middle to Old Age People with Intellectual Disability: Comparison of Middle Age and Old Age

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study was to compare the activities of daily living(ADL) of middle aged and elderly people with intellectual disabilities, and to examine the relationship between ADL and general characteristics in people with intellectual disabilities.

Method : This study used raw data of 2017 National Survey of the Disabled Persons. Of the 6,549 subjects in the raw data, 180 subjects were analyzed middle to old age adult and people with intellectual disabilities. Dependent variables were age(155 middle age, 25 old age), independent variables were general characteristics, health related variables including unmet medical need were chronic disease, depression experience. ADL consisted of 12 subdomain of basic ADL and 8 subdomain of instrumental ADL. Statistical analysis was performed using independent t test and Pearson correlation analysis.

Result : Elderly people with intellectual disabilities needed help more than middle age people in telephone use, shopping, preparing meals, housework, laundry, using transportation in baisc ADL, and telephone use, shopping, preparing meals, housework, laundry, using transportation in instrumental ADL(p<.05).

Conclusion : These findings suggest that aging-friendly industries related to health care and promotion for ADL improvement of elderly people with intellectual disabilities.
